The theoretical physicist and author of A Brief History of Time passed in the early hours of Wednesday morning at his home in Cambridge.
Hawking despite being diagnosed with the degenerative desease ALS, achieved more than most in his field; known best for his contributions to the fields of cosmology, general relativity, and quantum gravity especially in the context of black holes.
The Hawking children Lucy, Robert, and Tim gave a statement following the death of their beloved father “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world.
“He once said: ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him for ever.”
His positive outlook on life and determination to discover and educate along with his globally recognised whit, sense of humour and intellect is something that will be a reminder of how powerful and limitless the human mind is.
His contributions to theoretical physics has shaped the world as we know it.
